In April of this year I was asked to take part in an art installation on the streets of my home town, Bury St Edmunds. The ‘Art Around Town’ project aimed to bring businesses and artists together, and for me this resulted in a new exhibition of my work at the Guildhall Studio, in collaboration with studio owner John Martyn.
John supported local artists as part of the ‘Art Around Town Project’, with his studio exhibiting over thirty pizza boxes that had been inspired by creative minds thinking about ‘What Makes Bury Tick’.
Inspired by Bury’s independent shops and businesses and the unique moment in time leading up to Step 2 of the Government’s roadmap. As business owners and staff refreshed their window displays and prepared their premises to welcome back their customers, life was slowly returning to normal. It wouldn’t be long before the streets of Bury St Edmunds would be as we remembered them prior to March 2020; bustling with life as people enjoyed evenings out with friends and family. The social contact we had taken for granted was once again reawakening, the quiet deserted streets that had become a new normal would soon be consigned to memory.Twilight documents this unique moment in time; a time between the shadows of lockdown and the light at the end of that long dark tunnel.
Guildhall Studio owner John Martyn is quoted as saying, “The Art Around Town project demonstrated the wealth of creative talent we have here in Bury St Edmunds. The arts have taken such a hit over the last eighteen months, which has resulted in many creatives being unable to exhibit their work,. It is my objective going forward to showcase in the Studio the work of new and up and coming photographers such as Sandy Miles”
Although I graduated this year with a BA (Hons) in Photography from the University of Suffolk, this exhibition will be the first time one of my projects has been exhibited beyond online platforms. Using primarily analogue processes, I’ve looked to create an aesthetic of a bygone age; Twilight was shot on my thirty year old Hasselblad 500CM using the motion picture cinema film specially adapted for use in still photography, Cinestill 800T.
Twilight will be on show at the Guildhall Studio from Thursday 12 August until mid November. The Guildhall Studio, located at 7 Guildhall Street, Bury St Edmunds and is open Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 4pm (11am Sunday). Twilight can also be viewed in full on my website
